Location

Vessa is a semi-mountainous village and Mastichochori of Chios and belongs to the Municipality of Mastichochoria.  

Vessa is located 19 km southwest of the city of Chios (road distance), in a valley, from where a possible etymology of the name of the village (from the Homeric vessa = valley), and at an average altitude of 180 meters. The area of the eponymous municipal district is 21 square kilometers.  

Nearby destinations from Vessa are Mastichochoria Mesta, Pyrgi, Olympi, Ag. Yiorgis Sykousis, Armolia with its beautiful ceramics, the cave of Olympi, the Museum of Mastic in Pyrgi, as well as the traditional settlements of Avfertile as well as the beautiful nearby beaches of Komi, Mavra volia, Kato Fana, Trachili, Elinda. You can also enjoy the food of Vessa in Evanemos, the traditional tavern of the famous Lemonia, and the souvlaki of Mr. Kostas, as well as enjoy the fresh fish in the tavern of Kyra Despina on the beach of Lithi. 

Chios

Chios is an island in the North and East Aegean, the fifth largest in Greece with an area of 842 sq. m. kilometers and a coastline of 213 kilometers. Administratively, it is the Regional Unit of Chios, which belongs to the North Aegean Region along with Psara and Antipsara (on the west side) and Oinousses (on the east side).  The shortest distance of the island from the opposite coast of Asia Minor is 3.5 nautical miles from Cape Pounta to the peninsula of Eritrea, at the height of Cesme. Many myths have been woven about the name of Chios. The oldest name of the island was, according to Homer, the pre-Hellenic, Kios or Keos, Chios is the homeland of some of the largest Greek shipping families, national benefactors and distinguished scientists. Chios is surrounded by the sister islands of Oinousses and Psara, where Konstantinos Kanaris, hero of the revolution of 1821 for the independence of Greece, came from. Many claim that Chios is the birthplace of Christopher Columbus 

Anavatos

Anavatos is an almost abandoned medieval settlement of central Chios, which according to the 2011 census has only one inhabitant. It is located on the top of a steep hill of 450 meters, a fact that gave it the nickname “Mystras of the Aegean”. Anavatos has a natural fortification and is surrounded by two gorges, while the entrance to the settlement is possible only from the north. It is 16 km from the town of Chios.
